It's always recommended to retreat your timbers annually with a recommend product from a well known brand. This protects and maintains the aesthetics of the structure. Annual treatment is essential for your warranty.
Our treatment regime is strictly monitored and varies from product to product and the species of timber we use in our manufacture, typically the process is: 1. Timbers are sawn and planed and cut to their exact length. 2. Timbers are then placed in the treatment tank / pressure vessel. A negative vacuum of -1Bar is drawn down, and once the level is reached, it is held at that negative pressure for 15 minutes. This helps to open the cells of the timber. 3. The tank is then flooded with the CX8 solution and the tank is brought up to a positive pressure of +10Bar, once achieved it's held at this level for 40 minutes. This forces the CX8 treatment solution into the sap wood of the product. Please note, we only treat the sapwood and not the heartwood as the heartwood never accepts CX8 any solution. 4. The tank is drained and the negative pressure or vacuum is undertaken for a second time to withdraw any excess CX8 solution, this is passed back to the tank and reused in the next treatment cycle. 5. The timber are then left undercover to drain and dry. 6. The dried solution is locked into the cell structure of the timber component and cannot be washed or weather out. How are pressure-treated timbers superior to dip-treated products? Dip-treated timbers are only coated superficially and adhere to only the surface of the timber they are in contact with. There is no vacuum or pressure cycles and it’s a quick in/out and dried. Very limited protection is achieved and no protection against long term rot or decay is achieved.
We utilise a chemical called SIKA CX8 for the protection against rot and decay. We also use a moldicide to inhibit the growth of air bourn mould and fungi that exists in our daily environment.
We only select and use the very best chemical that have the smallest risk of harm to animals and the environment. All the chemicals are sourced from the SIKA Group of companies, who adhere to all environmental regulations.
Our products are made of material from well-managed certified forests and other controlled sources.
All of our products are assembled here at our North Yorkshire sawmill.
You can have total confidence that our products have full traceability.  Each timber structure we produce has a 'chain of custody', which will allow the materials to be traced back to a particular section of the forest it was harvested from.
  • Failure to re-treat the external cladding boards to help prevent water ingress.
  • Failure to keep the timbers from direct contact with the ground.
Remember, pressure treatment prevents rot and decay, but can not 100% ensure the structure is waterproof, hence the requirement for annual treatment. Treatment on an annual basis ensures compliance with warranty restrictions, but has the added benefit of maintaining the aesthetic appeal of your newly purchased timber structure.
All goods come with a standard 12 months warranty, subject to fair use. All timbers receive a 10 year warranty against rot and decay (subject to annual treatment). We only utilise stainless steel fixings to secure our cladding boards to the internal framing. Download our standard warranty (PDF).
Timber pods Our timber pods require a minimum of a 100mm think reinforced concrete base to 25Nmm strength. A sturdy timber deck may also be used, but be mindful that timber in contact with the ground is subject to rot and decay. Timber garages and carriage houses A specialist sub-contractor can install this structure. 125mm thick RC slab on 150mm thick compacted stone sub-base. We always recommend the use of 150mu damp proof membrane under the slab. Field shelters No base required, and by their very nature, these are constructed on galvanised steel skids that are designed to be towed around fields and paddocks to ensure your animals are always in the driest spot. Sheds Always choose a sheltered location that has easy access to all four elevations for installation and maintenance. Examples of sub-bases we recommended:
  • Concrete
  • Flags
  • Block paving
  • Timber decks
Remember, it is not advisable to put timber in direct contact with the ground, as this will cause premature failure of even treated products. 10mm packers of either slate or a plastic shim will allow the timbers to drain, dry and breath. We can provide a suitable treated timber sub-base to aid the challenges of providing structural flat and level base for you to assemble your shed or workshop. Please email info@theyorkshiretimbercompany.co.uk if you would like to add this to your order.
